This painting depicts farmers working in a rice field at daybreak. The spectacular morning sun has just broken out from the horizon. In early Spring, farmers start the planting season by flooding the terraces in preparation for ploughing fields and sowing seeds. The water in the fields reflects sunlight and generates spectacular colors separated by silhouettes of retaining walls.

Terraced Rice Field (Acrylic on Canvas - 3 panels 28" x 22" x 1.0" each panel)  by Herbert Chow

Graduated terraces, cut deep into steep mountainous terrain, have been used to farm rice and other crops for thousands of years in Asia. In early Spring, farmers start the planting season by flooding the terraces in preparation for ploughing fields and sowing seeds. The water in the fields reflects sunlight and generates spectacular colors separated by silhouettes of retaining walls. Reflection is not always continuous because terraces are set at different heights and angles following the contours of the mountain. The evening sky in this painting shows a magnificent sunset with a full color spectrum just a few minutes before twilight.
