Keen Eye

Keen eye (Acrylic on wood 7”x9”x0.75”)
Inv#72-20160703
Herbert Chow

Bird of prey always has a keen eye to hunt. Something has definitely caught the attention of this red tailed hawk. Wood showcases acrylics in creamier textures while the smooth surface presents objects in clear and vivid definition.

Dancing with colors is the theme of this painting. The ballerina immerses herself in a sea of colors and the rhythm of colors are in sync with her mood and dance steps.

Spirited Ride

Spirited Ride (Acrylic on wood 18”x24”x0.4”)
by Herbert Chow

A seagull hovering over quiet water at the La Jolla rocky shore. The gentle waves reflect blue hazy moonlight in a San Diego mid-summer evening. Unlike canvas, wood showcases acrylics in creamier textures while the smooth surface presents objects in clear and high definition.

Kingfishers usually hunt in fresh water. Occasionally, they can be seen feeding in shallow salt water if fresh water sources are not available. This painting incorporates seascape and waves with Kingfishers diving for food underwater.

By The River Bank

By the River Bank (Acrylic on canvas 24”x48”x1.5”)
Herbert Chow

Blue herons like to forage in calm fresh waters and slow moving rivers. They often hunt silently along wetlands, or seen flying high over tall trees. This quiet river bank provides a shelter and a safe nesting ground for blue herons. The slow flying Blue Heron with its great wing span is a majestic sight. The very slow wingbeats, tucked-in neck and trailing legs create an unmistakable image in flight. In this evening, the soft moonlight shines brilliantly over the flowing stream and illuminates forest and shrubs on both sides of the river.

Storm Passing

Storm Passing (Acrylic on canvas 38”x48”x1.5”)
by Herbert Chow

Clear sky, fleecy clouds and bright moonlights have chased away the dark heavy storm clouds. Although winds have died down significantly, the sea is still a bit rough and vestige of tall waves are whitewashing the rocky shore. Three eagles are delving the shoreline for food. We survive another storm.

Autumn Dialogs

Autumn Dialogs (Acrylic on canvas, painted on all sides, 35" x 25" x 1.5") by Herbert Chow

Fresh cold air, orange pumpkins, rustling maples and cascading leaves on ground are hallmarks of Fall. Autumn marks an end of a season and gives some trees their well deserved rest ahead of another busy year. Migratory birds can easily be found on bare trees. Of all the migratory birds, Black-&-White Warblers are most numerous and diverse during Fall. In general, males Black-&-White Warblers have black markings in their throats. In this painting, two males are competing for the attention of a female warbler. Although the male Black-&-White Warblers at the lower branch is making a lot of noise, the female warbler seems to be giving him a cold shoulder with her eyes fixated on the male sitting to her right.

I love winter and snow. The voluminous trees, snow covered paths, sweat smell of pine and crisp chill air are my collection of winter romance. On this quiet winter morning after a snowy night, the dog and its owner go on a leisure walk in the enchanted wood. There is a sense of serenity in this painting.

The colossal trees and the vibrant clouds stand tall as defenders of the forest to safeguard the pristine snow-covered path and its sojourners. Multiple layers of crisscrossing branches form a giant 3-D puzzle and allure one’s mind deeper into the forest. The dusky sky is ready to shed its violet cloak of the night and take on a brilliant bright blue color of a new winter day.

Yellow hooded orioles are commonly found in the west coast. They like to forage in bushes and shrubs and feed on nectar. Here, the two orioles are playing in the rose bush and showing considerable interest to the budding yellow rose. The birds, young green shoots, red leaves, and rose bud take the center stage of this painting. The light reflections and rose bushes are drawn in layer to increase depth. The contrast of yellow and red bring warmth to a bright spring morning.

This painting depicts farmers working in a rice field at daybreak. The spectacular morning sun has just broken out from the horizon. In early Spring, farmers start the planting season by flooding the terraces in preparation for ploughing fields and sowing seeds. The water in the fields reflects sunlight and generates spectacular colors separated by silhouettes of retaining walls.

I love fog. It is captivating, mystical and healing at the same time. Dense fog on the Golden Gate Bridge is a typical summer weather pattern in the Bay area. The two sea gulls appear to sense the incoming evening fog and make a dash to get away from it. Low clouds covering the San Francisco coastline often accompany dense fog in summer evening. The low hanging clouds regularly bring high winds and chill air so familiar to residents in the area. All of a sudden, I have the urge to bundle up.

Early Manhattan Morning

Early Manhattan Morning (35" x 25" 1.5" Acrylic on Canvas)

Manhattan Bridge is known for the stunning views of the Lower Manhattan skyline and, of course, great variety of graffiti on the rooftops of Chinatown. At the sea level and up close, I also marvel at the gorgeous sturdy design of the bridge metal infrastructure. At this early hour, only a handful of pedestrians are seen. The dense fog cloaks the early morning sun, reduces the surrounding buildings into overlapping silhouettes, and makes the towering bridge deck more impressive.
