Yuanyang is famous for its spectacular terraced rice fields. Terraces, cut deep into steep mountainous terrain, have been used to farm rice for thousands of years. After the rice harvest, farmers flood the terraces in preparation for the next planting season. The water in the fields reflects sunlight and generates spectacular colors separated by crisscrossing ridgelines. At this evening hour, there is only a single farmer remaining in the field. The high clouds accentuate the vertical dimension while the distant ridgelines at the flat plain create great depth perception.
