You’re probably wondering why the title of this painting is “Blue Moon”. Both of the wolves share the same blue moon as is evidenced from the blue reflections in their eyes. The focal points of the painting are in their visual and facial expressions which show the mellow side of these highly intelligent and social animals. The angular color pattern in the background balances the circular and monotone compositions of the two heads.
For centuries, wolves have been in the lives of humans with countless stories and myths. Portrayed as pests and vermin, wolves are misrepresented as villainous, wicked and treacherous, and have been hunted and killed throughout the centuries. Wolves are neither overly aggressive without provocation nor unconditionally gentle as compared to their domestic counterpart. It all boils down to survival instinct, which is inherent to all living organisms including humans. Gray wolves, once common throughout all of North America, were hunted and exterminated in many areas of the United States. Today, their range has been reduced to Canada, Alaska and the upper states of the US.
