Midnight Peace

Midnight Peace (Acrylic on canvas 24”x36”x1.5”)

I was captivated by both the sound and sight of this scenery. The incessant but peaceful dialog between the gentle waves and the volcanic rocks was mesmerizing. The tropical moon painted bright wavy lines on the night sky and littered shimmering sparkles on waves and wet rocks. I was equally hypnotized by the flickering fire on the burning torches along the shoreline. It was a nonchalant summer evening with only two playful seagulls (and me) at the Kekaha Kai beach in Big Island.

Calm Before the Storm

Calm Before the Storm (Acrylic on canvas 24”x48”x1.5”)
Inv# 76-20160901 AC
Herbert Chow

It was another gorgeous day with light warm breeze, calm waves, crystal-blue waters and soft, powdery white sand at South Sea Island, Fiji. Time stood still as I got groggy on a hammock while balancing a mojito in my hand. In a distance, a storm cloud was gathering steam with full intention to spoil my lazy and carefree afternoon. Luckily it was still at a distance from this small patch of island paradise. I had enough time to finish my drink and a refreshing nap.

Taking Off

Taking Off (Acrylic on wood 7”x9”x0.75”)

Haliaeetus albicilla is a white headed (i.e. bald) and white tailed sea eagle that can be seen in coastal areas of North America. The brown plumage suggests that this is a young bird. In this early morning, it is a graceful sight to watch this impressive creature take off from his nest high up in the ancient woodland and swoop down to snatch its prey out of water with tremendous accuracy and great speed. Acrylics on wood showcase its features in rich textures. This artwork comes with installed hardware for hanging on your wall.

This male peacock has brilliant blue-green plumage and splendid yellow blue eye-like spots on the tail feathers. The exquisite crested head and a pair of intimidating sharp eyes amplify its arrogance expression and make this proud creature unapproachable. Acrylics on wood showcase its features in rich textures. Small birds are susceptible to prolonged cold weather and predators. Quite often birds huddle tightly together in an effort to conserve body heat during cold snaps and snowy days. Acrylics on wood showcase colors in rich textures. The artwork comes with installed hardware for hanging on your wall.

Dancing with colors is the theme of this painting. The ballerina immerses herself in a sea of colors and the rhythm of colors are in sync with her mood and dance steps.

First Flight

First Flight (Acrylic on wood 16”x24”x0.4”)  by Herbert Chow

Two sea eagles are flying in formation to hunt for food in this glorious morning. Sea eagles often perch in high ground, circle low above waves and dive to catch their prey. They are powerful and magnificent to watch especially against the backdrop of a beautiful daybreak.

A Gusty Day

A Gusty Day (Acrylic on wood 16”x24”x0.4”) by Herbert Chow

The buildup of heavy dark clouds at Kona Coast (Hawaii) was a sign of incoming storm. High winds stirred up rough surfs and gave palm trees the undeserved flagellation. I saw nobody at the beach that day. Not even a single bird in sight.

Time Stands Still

Time Stands Still (Acrylic on wood 18”x24”x0.4”) Herbert Chow

This is a rendition of a daybreak at the Kona rocky shore. The painting captures the fleeting moment of sunlight peeking through the early morning clouds. I did not see killer whales in the water that morning but I invited a family to my painting to keep the seagulls company.

There are treasures in every sanctuary. Here, I left my heart with God at the hidden blue lagoon under the waterfall.

Another Day in California

Another Day in California (Acrylic on Canvas 25"x35"x1.5")
by Herbert Chow

It is another pleasant day at a sandy beach in Southern California. I see seagulls everywhere and it looks like a playbook from the movie "Bird". They ignore posted signs and behave just like the human beach-goers.

A kingfisher beats a pelican to the punch. He finds a perfect spot for dinner behind the rocky shore. Under the moonlit sky, the city skyline put on a splashy show with sparkling neon lights. In this painting, I incorporates scenes both above and below water.

By The River Bank

By the River Bank (Acrylic on canvas 24”x48”x1.5”)
Herbert Chow

Blue herons like to forage in calm fresh waters and slow moving rivers. They often hunt silently along wetlands, or seen flying high over tall trees. This quiet river bank provides a shelter and a safe nesting ground for blue herons. The slow flying Blue Heron with its great wing span is a majestic sight. The very slow wingbeats, tucked-in neck and trailing legs create an unmistakable image in flight. In this evening, the soft moonlight shines brilliantly over the flowing stream and illuminates forest and shrubs on both sides of the river.

Storm Passing

Storm Passing (Acrylic on canvas 38”x48”x1.5”)
by Herbert Chow

Clear sky, fleecy clouds and bright moonlights have chased away the dark heavy storm clouds. Although winds have died down significantly, the sea is still a bit rough and vestige of tall waves are whitewashing the rocky shore. Three eagles are delving the shoreline for food. We survive another storm.
