Watchful Eyes (Acrylic on Canvas 36" by 27")
by Herbert Chow

A male duck, called a drake, is usually more colorful than a female (hen). The color of the drake reflects against the pond and adds to the swirling greens and blues of the water. The baby ducklings are covered with very fine yellow fur. The wet fur tends to clump into patches due to lack of oil on baby fur. These wet patches of fur are demonstrated with thicker layer of paints on the bodies.

The ridges that emanate from the drake divide the painting into foreground and background sceneries. The background is painted with well blended and diffused brushstroke to make the imagery appear further away with less defined edges. In the foreground, reflection tends to be sharper and more vivid. Finer ridges are painted with thick layer of blue and white acrylics using a smaller brush to give direction to the flow of water. A few of the water marks in the foreground are created with pouring acrylic technique.
