Midnight Peace

Midnight Peace (Acrylic on canvas 24”x36”x1.5”)
Inv# 77-20160915 AC
Herbert Chow

I was captivated by both the sound and sight of this scenery. The incessant but peaceful dialog between the gentle waves and the volcanic rocks was mesmerizing. The tropical moon painted bright wavy lines on the night sky and littered shimmering sparkles on waves and wet rocks. I was equally hypnotized by the flickering fire on the burning torches along the shoreline. It was a nonchalant summer evening with only two playful seagulls (and me) at the Kekaha Kai beach in Big Island.

Rhythm of Colors

Rhythm of Colors (Acrylic on canvas 38”x48”x1.5”) Herbert Chow

Dancing with colors is the theme of this painting. The ballerina immerses herself in a sea of colors and the rhythm of colors are in sync with her mood and dance steps.

I love winter and snow. The voluminous trees, snow covered paths, sweat smell of pine and crisp chill air are my collection of winter romance. On this quiet winter morning after a snowy night, the dog and its owner go on a leisure walk in the enchanted wood. There is a sense of serenity in this painting.

The colossal trees and the vibrant clouds stand tall as defenders of the forest to safeguard the pristine snow-covered path and its sojourners. Multiple layers of crisscrossing branches form a giant 3-D puzzle and allure one’s mind deeper into the forest. The dusky sky is ready to shed its violet cloak of the night and take on a brilliant bright blue color of a new winter day.

The soft moon light illuminates the fully blossomed rose adding to its grace and gentility. The moon shadow paints the edges of the pink rose with white, violet and blue highlights adding a touch of melancholy to the happy mood usually associated with pink rose. That is the feeling of LOVE!

Eiffel Tower is a cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable iron lattice structures in the world. There are many images of the tower taken from all sides but the “belly” view is kind of rare. I draw the well-lit tower from a low angle accentuating the height of the structure. The thin, wispy blue cirrus clouds in the background are in high contrast with the brightly lit and muscular iron tower. Pedestrian traffic under the tower is quite sparse at this early evening hour. In this painting, there are definitely more pigeons than humans.

I am inspired by the intense and mesmerizing stare of Romani dancers during performance. Of course, nobody else can do that better than the great Gypsy Queen, Carmen Amaya. In this painting, I try to incorporate determination, rhythm, sensuality, drama, intensity and shrewdness into the lady’s eyes. The veil accentuates her attractive eyes and red lips. The abstract background symbolizes flowing music and rapid motion of dance steps.

Dandelions (Acrylic on Canvas 3 panels 28" x 22" x 1.0" each panel)

“Dandelions “ is the third painting in the Order and Chaos Collection. After the yellow petals wither and fall off the stalk, dandelion is covered with a ball of white pappus seeds. In this painting, I keep the dandelion seeds in minimal colors of white, purple and blue. The darker blue-green background adds to the feeling of a gusty and windy day. Dandelion seeds are blown away even with a slightest breeze. These chaotic aerial dancers will soon take hold and sprout into another orderly crop of beautiful yellow flowers.
