I love fog. It is captivating, mystical and healing at the same time. Dense fog on the Golden Gate Bridge is a typical summer weather pattern in the Bay area. The two sea gulls appear to sense the incoming evening fog and make a dash to get away from it. Low clouds covering the San Francisco coastline often accompany dense fog in summer evening. The low hanging clouds regularly bring high winds and chill air so familiar to residents in the area. All of a sudden, I have the urge to bundle up.

Manhattan Bridge is known for the stunning views of the Lower Manhattan skyline and, of course, great variety of graffiti on the rooftops of Chinatown. At the sea level and up close, I also marvel at the gorgeous sturdy design of the bridge metal infrastructure. At this early hour, only a handful of pedestrians are seen. The dense fog cloaks the early morning sun, reduces the surrounding buildings into overlapping silhouettes, and makes the towering bridge deck more impressive.

New York at Dawn (Acrylic on Canvas 35"x 25"x 1.5")
by Herbert Chow

“NYC at Dawn” is the first of 6 paintings out of my City Skyline Collection. Stay tune for my rendition of "Hong Kong at Sunset".

Cloud formation, wave and fog are my favorite abstract objects. All these elements are present In this painting. At this early hour, NYC is still shrouded with a thick grayish marine layer concealing the ground of the Statue of Liberty Monument. The early sun casts a hazy yellow highlight on the city skyline through the marine layer. Above the marine layer, I draw the sky using different shades of cerulean and light blue giving hint of what to come after the fog is gone. The yellow highlights in the marine layer serve to connect the Statue of Liberty and the Freedom Tower (in the middle of the skyline) with a resilient spiritual link between them. This is the dawn of a new day in NYC with Statue of Liberty and Freedom Tower leading the charge.
